A rare natural black diamond weighing 888.88 carats, named Infinity, has been unveiled publicly for the first time at the Dubai Diamond Conference.
The diamond was presented by Antwerp-based Diamond Trading NV at the event organised by the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC). Security company Brink’s handled its transportation to Dubai.
Originating from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Infinity was cut from a 1,138-carat rough diamond acquired by Andrew Coxon on behalf of De Beers in 1975.
The Gemological Institute of America examined the rough stone and recorded it in 2013 as the largest single-crystal natural diamond it had examined and reported on up to that time.
Cutting and polishing work was carried out between 2022 and 2024, resulting in the finished 888.88-carat stone.
Daniel de Belder of Diamond Trading NV said the cutting process was designed to preserve the stone’s natural characteristics rather than remove the traces of its formation deep within the Earth.
The diamond’s unveiling highlighted the importance of rarity, provenance and craftsmanship in the natural diamond industry. No official valuation or confirmation of a sale was announced at the event.
