An oil spill from a tanker offshore has prompted the closure of beaches in parts of the UAE’s northern emirates as authorities work to contain the pollution and assess its environmental impact.

Ras Al Khaimah has ordered all beaches in the emirate closed until further notice. The decision follows earlier closures in Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah, where authorities have taken precautionary measures along affected coastal areas.

The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said containment and clean-up operations are under way after oil leaking from a tanker was detected offshore. Technical teams are also assessing the impact on marine habitats and coastal areas.

Residents in Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain have reported a strong fuel-like smell in recent days. Authorities have said the odour does not pose a health risk, while urging fishermen and other sea users to stay away from affected areas and follow official instructions.

The identity of the tanker involved and the exact cause of the spill have not been disclosed. There is currently no confirmed date for reopening the affected beaches.
