Dubai is set to expand its stormwater drainage network by around 100km under the latest phase of the Dh30 billion Tasreef programme.
Dubai Municipality has awarded four contracts worth a combined Dh3 billion to develop and extend the city’s drainage infrastructure across nearly 100 square kilometres.
The new network will cover areas including Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Safa, Al Manara, Al Quoz, Al Barsha, Al Wasl, Za’abeel, Al Satwa and Al Marmoom.
The projects include around 42km of drainage lines serving Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim, 14km between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, 21km around Al Wasl and areas east of Dubai Water Canal, and a further 23km in Al Marmoom.
The wider Tasreef programme is designed to increase Dubai’s stormwater drainage capacity by 700 per cent and improve the city’s ability to deal with heavy rainfall and extreme weather.
The latest work comes as Dubai continues to strengthen its drainage infrastructure following periods of heavy rain that have caused water accumulation and disruption in some parts of the emirate.
