Ras Al Khaimah has launched its first electric public bus as part of an upgraded Purple Route, improving connectivity, expanding coverage, and supporting the emirate’s sustainability goals.
The Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA) announced the revamped route on Wednesday, linking Al Nakheel and Manar Mall. The service will be free for the first month during its trial phase.
The upgraded Purple Route, which began operations on June 3, 2026, adds 14 kilometres of coverage through route adjustments and new stops, while revised schedules aim to reduce waiting times and improve reliability.
The route now serves nine key locations, including hospitals, universities, government centres and commercial areas, with 12 daily trips between Al Nakheel and Manar Mall.
A key feature of the upgrade is the introduction of Ras Al Khaimah’s first electric bus, part of RAKTA’s push toward greener transport and reduced emissions.
The Purple Route is one of five bus routes across the emirate, forming part of a wider network expansion aimed at increasing public transport coverage from 55 per cent to 65 per cent by 2026.
Officials say the improvements, supported by the Sayer smart app for real-time journey planning, are designed to make commuting more efficient and accessible while supporting sustainable urban growth.
