Travellers urged to stay alert amid Ebola, hantavirus concerns

UAE health experts have urged residents travelling during the summer holidays to stay informed about health advisories, monitor updates at their destinations and seek medical attention if they feel unwell during or after their trips.

The advice comes as global health authorities continue monitoring outbreaks, including Ebola and hantavirus cases reported in some regions. However, UAE authorities have confirmed that the country’s public health situation remains stable, with surveillance and emergency response systems actively monitoring global developments.

The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) and the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) have advised against non-essential travel to Ebola-affected countries, including Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan.

Medical experts stressed that travellers should rely on official information rather than social media rumours. They noted that Ebola is mainly spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person and does not spread through casual contact, air, water or food.

Doctors advised travellers to watch for symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, vomiting and diarrhoea, particularly after visiting affected areas, and to inform healthcare providers about their travel history if they become ill.

Experts also recommended checking travel advisories before departure, maintaining good hygiene, staying hydrated, carrying hand sanitiser and ensuring travel insurance and emergency medical contacts are readily available.

They emphasised that most residents can continue their travel plans safely by following official guidance and remaining aware of health updates.
