A major upgrade of Al Safa Street is expected to reduce travel time through the area from 12 minutes to approximately three.
The project covers 1.5 kilometres between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Wasl Road. It includes two bridges and two tunnels extending for a combined 3,120 metres.
Road capacity is expected to double from 6,000 to 12,000 vehicles an hour in both directions. Al Safa Street will also be widened from three to four signal-controlled lanes in each direction, supplemented by two free-flowing lanes.
Temporary traffic diversions will remain in place during construction, although the route will continue to operate.
