The first phase of Sharjah’s Al Taawun Tunnel project is expected to open in November, improving a major commuter connection between Sharjah and Dubai.
The 500-metre tunnel runs beneath Al Taawun Roundabout and provides three lanes in each direction. It connects Al Taawun Street with Al Nahda Bridge and routes towards Dubai.
A new signalised intersection will accommodate approximately 4,200 vehicles an hour in each direction during peak periods. Authorities expect the improvements to reduce waiting times around the roundabout by as much as 85 per cent.
The project will also provide more direct access to Expo Centre Sharjah, including during November’s Sharjah International Book Fair. Full completion is scheduled for February 2027.
The Al Taawun Roundabout monument was temporarily removed during construction and will be redesigned and returned to its original location when the work is complete.
