Dubai opened two additional lanes on a five-kilometre section of Emirates Road between Sharjah and Wadi Al Amardi on Sunday (August 30), as part of efforts to improve traffic flow on the key commuter route.
The expansion increased the road from six to eight lanes and raised its capacity from 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour. Journey times along the upgraded section are expected to fall by as much as 25 per cent.
Emirates Road, also known as the E611, is a major route for commuters travelling between Dubai and Sharjah. It also offers motorists from Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah an alternative to routes passing through central Dubai.
The upgrade forms part of wider improvements to the 110-kilometre road. A separate Dh750-million federal project will widen a 25-kilometre section between Sharjahâs Al Badee Interchange and Umm Al Quwain and upgrade Interchange No. 7 with six bridges.
