Social media users in the UAE have been reminded that offensive or defamatory online posts can result in imprisonment and fines of up to Dh500,000.

The warning forms part of a nationwide digital-awareness campaign launched by the Ministry of Interior in cooperation with Dubai Police and the Dubai Electronic Security Centre.

Authorities highlighted Article 43 of the UAE’s Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes. The provision covers insulting others or making allegations through digital platforms that could expose them to punishment or public contempt.

The campaign urges residents to think carefully before posting comments, sharing material or directing personal attacks at others online. Authorities stressed that digital communications can carry legal consequences even when users believe they are simply making a comment or joke.

Residents are being encouraged to use social media responsibly and resolve disagreements without resorting to insults, mockery or potentially defamatory statements.

The warning is particularly relevant to expatriates who use social media and messaging platforms extensively for community discussions, business and everyday communication.
