Almost half of UAE expatriates have not prepared a will, according to a new survey highlighting the potential complications families can face when a resident dies without formally documenting their wishes.
A YouGov survey of 1,014 UAE expatriates found that 49 per cent had not started a will, while 56 per cent believed their assets would automatically pass to their spouse or partner.
Legal experts say that assumption can be wrong. Depending on the circumstances and the inheritance framework that applies, a spouse may not automatically receive the entire estate. Children and other relatives can also have legal inheritance rights.
The absence of a will can create additional complications involving bank accounts, property, business interests and the care of children. Families may have to go through legal procedures before assets can be accessed or transferred.
The survey also found that only 24 per cent of parents with children under 18 had formally documented guardianship arrangements.
Legal specialists advise expatriates to consider preparing a will based on their individual circumstances, particularly if they own property or other assets in the UAE or have children.
