Abu Dhabi Cyclists, E-Scooter Riders Face Dh500 Fine on Pedestrian Walkways

Cyclists and e-scooter riders in Abu Dhabi could face a Dh500 fine for using walkways and other areas reserved exclusively for pedestrians, authorities have warned.

The Department of Municipalities and Transport said riders must use designated cycling routes and avoid pedestrian-only paths to protect the safety of both riders and people walking or jogging.

The penalty is being enforced under Administrative Decision No. 21 of 2022. Authorities clarified that the violation applies to the person riding the bicycle or e-scooter, rather than pedestrians using the walkway.

The warning comes as bicycles and e-scooters become increasingly popular as everyday transport in Abu Dhabi, with residents using them for short journeys and to connect with public transport. Authorities said the emirate’s cycling infrastructure is being developed according to local conditions, with dedicated routes, road markings and safety measures designed to separate riders from pedestrians and vehicles where necessary.

Residents using bicycles and e-scooters are therefore being urged to follow signs and use designated routes rather than taking shortcuts through pedestrian areas.
