Dubai Metro marked its 17th anniversary on Wednesday, having developed into the backbone of the emirate’s public-transport network since beginning operations on September 9, 2009.
The network was officially launched at nine minutes and nine seconds past 9 pm on 09.09.09. More than 110,000 passengers used the service during its first 48 hours.
Dubai Metro has since transported more than 2.4 billion passengers across over 4.3 million journeys, while maintaining a punctuality rate of approximately 99.7 per cent.
In 2025 alone, the Red and Green lines carried 294.7 million passengers, an increase of seven per cent from the previous year. A further 136.5 million passengers used the Metro during the first six months of 2026.
The system currently covers nearly 90 kilometres and operates 55 stations across its Red and Green lines.
Expansion plans include the 30-kilometre Blue Line, which will add 14 stations, and the planned 42-kilometre Gold Line, which is expected to include 18 stations.
