Emirates has officially unveiled its new Economy class headrest that went viral on social media last month, confirming that the adjustable design will be introduced across much of its fleet as part of a major investment to enhance passenger comfort.
The Dubai-based airline first attracted attention in June after a video showing the seat’s wing-like side supports, designed to cradle passengers’ heads while sleeping, gained widespread attention online.
The product, named the U-Dream Headrest, has now been confirmed by Emirates as a “world-first” innovation aimed at providing greater support for Economy class passengers during long-haul flights.
The multi-adjustable leather headrest, part of Emirates’ Safran Seats Z400 Economy seat, features padded side wings that fold inward to support the head and neck. It can be adjusted vertically and tilted to suit passengers of different heights and body types, helping reduce head movement while sleeping.
Emirates said the U-Dream Headrest has been independently tested and certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, making it the first such technology to be introduced at scale by an airline.
“Emirates never rests on its laurels when it comes to customer experience and we have found a way to significantly improve the comfort for Economy class passengers, especially those travelling long-haul,” Emirates president Tim Clark said.
“The U-Dream changes the game if the person wants to sleep – by supporting the neck in full. No more neck pillows needed,” he added.
The airline said the headrest is already available on three Airbus A350 aircraft currently in service, with installations underway across its A350 fleet. All Emirates A350 aircraft are expected to be equipped with the technology by the end of the year.
The upgrade will also be included in all 270 Boeing 777X aircraft ordered by Emirates, while retrofitting of most Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s will begin from 2027.
Emirates said cabin crew have been trained to assist passengers with using the headrest, which is designed to be easily adjusted, cleaned and sanitised between flights.
The airline said passengers travelling on its A350 aircraft have already provided positive feedback, praising the additional support and comfort offered by the new design.
The rollout is part of Emirates’ multi-billion-dollar fleet refurbishment programme, with the airline aiming to bring enhanced comfort features traditionally associated with premium cabins to Economy class travellers.
