Abu Dhabi introduces dedicated licence plates for driverless vehicles

Abu Dhabi has introduced dedicated licence plates for trial and commercial driverless vehicles as the emirate expands its smart mobility initiatives.

The new blue-design plates carry clear labels — “Auto Drive” for vehicles providing commercial autonomous services and “Test” for vehicles operating under testing and pilot programmes.

The system will allow authorities to identify and monitor autonomous vehicles, enhance road safety, and ensure operators comply with approved technical and operational standards.

The move follows the launch of a central control room by Abu Dhabi Mobility, under the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), to oversee autonomous vehicle operations across the emirate.

The facility enables real-time monitoring, data analysis, route tracking, speed monitoring, emergency coordination, and operational reporting to improve safety and efficiency.

The initiative is part of Abu Dhabi’s broader efforts to build a regulatory framework for autonomous mobility and accelerate the adoption of driverless transport technologies.
